Do you find that your jaw is sore when you wake up in the morning? Are you finding that you are having more headaches and migraines?
At York Mills Dental, we offer Botox treatments for patients who are experience serious jaw problems like TMD, bruxism (teeth grinding), and tension headaches. Botox injections in dentistry are used mainly for patients that have a history of grinding their teeth when they sleep. Botox relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.
Prior to administrating Botox treatment, Dr. Ching needs to check the patient's suitability to the treatment. It is especially important for you to disclose any prior medical history, as Botox may not produce the desired results when used in conjunction with certain medications and substances.
Botox is injected into the temporalis and masseter muscles that together can cause jaw pain and headaches. Botox works by blocking nerve signals that cause uncontrollable muscle movements, essentially relaxing the muscles. The injections are no more painful than a bug bite or pinprick, and does not impair driving ability. Normal activity can be resumed immediately after the treatment, although strenuous activity should be avoided for up to 24 hours.
Botox injections take only 10 to 15 minutes and remain effective for three to five months. Therefore, Botox treatments must be repeated every few months depending on the patient. Most patients who receive Botox treatment regularly after a year or two have noticed the decrease frequency needed for retreatment since their muscles have atrophied over time. The need for Botox treatment can therefore decrease from 3-4 times a year to 1-2 times a year.
