Do you notice your gums are looking and feeling irritated? Do you see blood when you are brushing and flossing your teeth?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a serious condition that begins with a build-up of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and below the gum. Plaque is a build-up of substances that from on your teeth from what you eat and drink throughout the day. These can be removed when you brush and floss your teeth.
However, if your teeth are not properly cleaned, this plaque will solidify on your teeth and become tartar. Tartar can cause the first and reversible phase of periodontal disease called gingivitis. The sooner it is detected, the easier it will be for us to fix it. We are able to remove tartar build-up using scaling. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to an irreversible state called periodontitis, where the bone and soft tissue that supports the teeth are destroyed.
